Orientation welcomes and provides important information to all of the new foreign students. The information is important to students enrolling for the first time in one of KU's full-term degree programs (Bachelor, Masters, or PhD) or as a Visiting Student or Exchange Student (one year or one semester). Explains KU's course registration and payment system, Thailand's Education Visa regulations and procedures (Visa extension, 90 Day Reporting, etc.). KU staff and guest speakers review KU's academic calendar, student activities, and introduce students to cultural norms unique to Thailand. The Orientation program begins in the morning usually and is followed by a tour of campus with stops at important venues (Main Library, sports and fitness areas). Orientation customarily occurs in the week prior to the first day of classes, according to the International Programs Academic Calendar.
Variety of sports activities and fun games. Some of the activities revolve around popular competitive sports (basketball or football/soccer) but many of the activities are appropriate to students with little or no athletic prowess. Both Thai and foreign students are invited, as the predominant purpose is to promote interaction between Thai and Non-Thai collegians, while having fun together. International Sports Day is normally arranged in February or March (Semester 2).
The popular International Foods Fair is normally arranged in August or September. The event features the various cultures represented by KU's international students who are invited (with modest financial support) to cook and market foods from their home country or to present a dance or other performance from their country. Students may win prizes for booth decoration, national costume, and performance. Anyone on KU's campus may attend, so it is a popular, active annual event.
Teaches visiting international students about Thai cooking. It is interactive, hands-on learning; international students follow along while using the ingredients, and learn how to cut, blend, and cook a tasty Thai meal and a Thai dessert. The goal is to give the students confidence to try simple dishes, such as Somtam (Thai Papaya Salad) and Taro dumpling with coconut milk (Bua Loy), for example, later at their home. This event is arranged every semester.
International students are taught to make their own Krathong, while Thai staff explain the story of Krathong. After the small floral floats are completed, everyone goes to one of KU's large ponds where students may float their creations while giving thanks to the spirits. Efforts are made to use environmentally friendly materials. This event occurs at Loy Krathong (November)
International students visit the venue where university personnel celebrate the Songkran Festival according to traditional symbolic ceremonies (water blessings) and are accompanied later to a popular spot in Bangkok where students may observe (and participate) in more modern forms of celebrating Songkran day (water throwing). This activity is arranged in April, during the Songkran holiday period.
We organize and lead international students on tour to sites in or nearby Bangkok, where they may learn about Thailand's cultural heritage. Each Bangkok Trip has a different focus. During the time they are enrolled, students may visit a wide variety of venues: historic sites, ancient temples, art or cultural museums, or learning centers. For example: the Bank of Thailand, Thailand's National Museum, Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Rice Institute, Wat Arun, Museum of Contemporary Art. Bangkok Trips are arranged throughout the academic terms, August - May.
Seeks to arrange an opportunity for international students to learn about the people and cultures in a province outside Bangkok. Students will actually participate in some type of volunteer activity linked to the community being visited. International students already have learned a little about Thai traditions as part of the introductory classes at KU and this Volunteer Trip provides an opportunity to engage actively with members in a rural Thai community. In the past, KU's international students have read stories in English to school children who are studying English, performed physical labor painting school classrooms, planted new plants in a mangrove forest, and more. This activity is arranged as circumstances permit; the goal is to plan at least one Volunteer Trip each semester.
To welcome and help international students to adjust to academic life at KU, to foster interaction with Thai students, and to match international students with volunteer Thai Buddies. The idea is to provide access to a student peer who can provide advice about studies and life at KU, or information about getting around and settling into Thailand. It is totally volunteer; small groups of international students are matched with small groups of Thai students. Thai students can advise . . . where is the classroom, which are the best cafes or canteens on campus, or even where to get a haircut, and more. KU Buddy Program is launched at the beginning of each semester.
